After wall-to-wall coverage of the swine-flu outbreak for nearly a month, things seemed to have calmed down recently, with many of the new cases less severe than had initially been expected. But WHO Director-General Margaret Chan today made an effort to keep the public and countries around the world from letting down their guard.

“This virus may have given us a grace period, but we do not know how long this grace period will last,” Chan said in an address before the World Health Assembly in Geneva. “No one can say whether this is just the calm before the storm.”

For one, Chan said that new diseases are “by definition, poorly understood when they emerge.” That’s especially the case with flu viruses. “Influenza viruses are the ultimate moving target,” Chan said. “Their behavior is notoriously unpredictable.”

One question, for instance, is how the new virus will interact with other viruses that are circulating in humans, Chan said, noting that seasonal flu season will soon pick up in the Southern Hemisphere.

In its daily briefing for reporters, the CDC echoed Chan’s sentiments. “The H1N1 virus is not going away, despite what you may have heard,” said Anne Schuchat of the CDC. She added later: “I think it’s important to dispel the idea that we’re out of the woods or that this was as problem that really didn’t merit response.”
