  • CBO: 4 Million Americans to be Hit by Insurance Penalties in 2016

    Friday, April 23rd, 2010 at 06:31 | Comments Off

Under health-care overhaul legislation, failure to buy the mandated insurance coverage means penalties, and now we have an official estimate of how many people might be affected. The Congressional Budget Office is projecting that about 4 million people will get dinged in 2016, according to the Associated Press.

That doesn’t mean only 4 million people will be uninsured; the CBO puts that number at 21 million Americans. But most won’t make enough money to be eligible for penalties. The average bill ..read more

    Thursday, April 15th, 2010 at 06:05 | Comments Off

The controversy over gene patents is not going away anytime soon. As the WSJ reports, a Duke University study concludes that exclusive licensing of gene-based diagnostic tests can keep patients from benefiting from genetic discoveries and often leads to legal wrangling.

And current disagreements surrounding gene patents –- such as the recent federal court decision to invalidate seven patents covering the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes licensed solely to Myriad Genetics –- may be small potatoes compared with what lies ahead. If ..read more

Student loans appear to be a health overhaul headache: the reconciliation bill is going back to the House for a vote, thanks to Senate Republicans who found two provisions in the document — including one related to student loans — that violate its rules and can’t be included in the final bill.

Some 16 lines of text will be removed from the 153-page bill. One provision is technical and has no substantive value, and the other is about a measure to ..read more

  • Obama’s Call for Bipartisan Discussion Passes for Health News

    Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at 01:25 | Comments Off

Hard to believe, but it was just weeks ago that everybody was busy hashing out the last-minute nitty gritty of what the Dems’ final health-care bill would look like.

Now, in a 59-41 world, President Obama’s call for a televised bipartisan discussion of health care — a proposal that’s reasonable enough, but pretty dull and process-y — passes for big news on the health-care overhaul front.

Indeed, as the WSJ notes, “it’s unclear how the bipartisan health-care event will move the issue ..read more
