Retail Clinics: CVS to Double Presence, Walgreens Seeks PartnersCategories: Wall Street Journal
Drugstores are trying to bolster their presence in the in-store clinic market, even though the concept has thus far not been a particularly profitable one. The WSJ reports that CVS Caremark may double its number of MinuteClinic retail operations over the next five years.
The company has no plans to forge financial partnerships with medical providers, but instead prefers “collaborative” non-financial ties, MinuteClinic President Andrew Sussman tells the paper. Bloomberg quotes Gabelli analyst Jeff Jonas as saying that CVS has trimmed ..read more

Business Rallies Against Health Overhaul as Obama Signs BillCategories: Wall Street Journal
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce plans to spend $50 million in the months leading up to the fall elections in a continuing push against the health-overhaul legislation, the WSJ reports.
“The Chamber is going to carry a message across the country that says the health care debate is not over,” Thomas J. Donohue, the business lobbying group’s president and CEO, said in a letter sent to the chamber’s board members late Monday. The law “is a major step in the wrong ..read more

Merck Follows Pfizer on Earnings, but Avoids its FootstepsCategories: Wall Street Journal
With an apparent eye on Pfizer’s experience early this month, Merck officials made one thing abundantly clear during the morning’s earnings report: “Nothing in our guidance has changed,” CFO Peter Kellogg said on a conference call with analysts.
The emphasis was undoubtedly a reaction to Pfizer’s Feb. 3 earnings report when it lowered its 2012 guidance. Pfizer officials dismissed the import of the change at the time, saying it merely reflected some divestitures. Still, the news pushed down Pfizer shares ..read more

Reports: GlaxoSmithKline to Cut More than 3,000 JobsCategories: Wall Street Journal
The cuts keep coming from U.K. pharma. Just a few days after AstraZeneca said it would eliminate thousands of jobs, the London papers reported this weekend that GlaxoSmithKline is about to announce some big cuts of its own.
The Times of London said Glaxo will cut “up to 4,000″ jobs; the Financial Times put the figure at “more than 3,000.”
The cuts — which the FT says will include will include “manufacturing, sales, administration and research staff” — are expected to be ..read more

Mossberg on Blood-Glucose Test: Tech Meets HealthCategories: Wall Street Journal
The latest sign of the health-tech convergence: Walt Mossberg, the WSJ’s personal tech guru who writes about smart phones and operating systems, is reviewing a blood-glucose meter.
The device, made by Bayer and sold under the brand name Contour, looks like a fancy USB thumb drive, with an extra appendage. (That’s a picture of it on the right.) The appendage is the business end of the glucose meter, where the patient inserts a test strip dabbed with a drop of blood. ..read more

Of Pfizer, a New Treatment for a Rare Disease and Carrot CellsCategories: Wall Street Journal
Pfizer’s deal today with Israeli biotech Protalix BioTherapeutics to license most of the rights for a promising therapy for a rare disease caught our eye for a number of reasons:
The deal gives Pfizer rights to sell a treatment for Gaucher’s disease that will soon go for FDA approval. Pfizer will pay Protalix as much as $115 million for rights to sell the therapy anywhere but Israel. The dollar amount is minuscule for a big pharma with a $151 billion market ..read more
