In the debate over health-care reform, pharmacists — unlike insurance companies and drug makers — haven’t been much discussed. But the people who fill our prescriptions could help the health-care system save billions, Greg Wasson, CEO of pharmacy chain Walgreens, told the Chicago Tribune.
Other industry leaders also gave the Tribune their perspective on health-care reform solutions.
Wasson says that pharmacists could increase their role in “medication management therapy,” increasing patients’ compliance with their drug regimen and thereby reducing costs associated with a disease that result when patients don’t take their drugs.
But to do that, he says pharmacies would need to be paid more than the $2 to $4 a prescription they currently receive. He didn’t say how much more.
“Pharmacists can play a key role,” Wasson told the Tribune. “Pharmacists are the most accessible health-care provider and one of the most trusted professionals next to nurses.”
