New Health-Reform Timetable: ‘Done By the Fall’

Published On: July 24th, 2009

Health ReformWhile President Obama has been stumping for fast action on health care legislation, chances that the Senate would deliver a bill before its August vacation have withered away amid a crush of financing worries. So with that deadline by the boards, what’s the new timetable for the Obama health-reform express?

The leader of Senate Democrats, Harry Reid sketched out a couple of targets today. He said the Senate Finance Committee would come up with its overhaul plan before the Senate begins its monthlong break in about two weeks. Reid said he would then hammer out a combined bill from that and the bill already passed by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The failure to meet Obama’s deadline for pre-recess action on Senate and House bills doesn’t represent a fatal blow to his overhaul goals. But generating momentum toward a target can be crucial in Washington.

The president has underscored that point himself several times recently, including today at a town-hall meeting while traveling in Ohio. “If there isn’t a deadline in Washington, it doesn’t happen,” Obama said.

Commenting on Reid’s statement that a Senate vote on the health bill won’t happen before August break, the president said, “That’s OK, just keep working.” He added, “I want it done by the fall.” See his other comments in a live blog of the town meeting by WSJ’s Washington Wire.

Bonus Reform: Obama is also visiting the Cleveland Clinic, which he’s cited as a model. See more-detailed look about the Clinic from this morning’s WSJ.
