Merck Hires Ex-CDC Chief; New PBM Boss at CVS

MerckA couple interesting hires in corporate health-care were announced today:

Julie Gerberding, the doctor who ran the CDC from 2002 until early this year, will head Merck’s vaccine unit, the company said. Vaccines are a $5 billion business for Merck; the previous head of the group retired earlier this year. Merck seems to be rounding out its exec team. The company said last week that it hired the dean of Tufts med school to fill a top spot. And earlier this month, the company named a former Wyeth guy to head up vaccines and biologics manufacturing, Dow Jones Newswires notes.

CVS Caremarkhired Per Lofberg to run its pharmacy-benefits-management business. The company said last month that its PBM unit, which manages prescription-drug benefits for employers and other institutions, lost nearly $5 billion in contracts. (Since then, the group did manage to land a $500 million per year contract with a Texas pension fund.) Lofberg was chairman of the PBM Medco back when it was owned by Merck. More recently, he was running a company called Generation Health that is supposed to do for genetic testing what PBMs do for prescription drugs. Lofberg will succeed Howard McClure, who retired last month.
