GE CEO to Tout Health-Care Push

ImmeltNote: This post is updated from its initial form to reflect new information released by GE this morning.

GE CEO Jeff Immelt (pictured) is scheduled to be in Washington this morning, talking up the company’s plan to spend $6 billion over six years in an effort to expand its health-care business.

It’s not entirely clear yet what exactly Immelt will say, nor is it clear whether the money is all new funding or whether it includes existing expenditures, the WSJ reports.

GE has been in the business of selling medical equipment for decades, but may be looking for growth in other health-related areas.

Given that the talk is in DC, and that the stimulus bill includes more than $30 billion in federal incentives for doctors and hospitals to buy electronic health-records systems, it seems reasonable to expect at least some focus on GE’s EHR business.

The Rwandan ambassador is also expected be there, suggesting the presentation will include GE’s work to expand its health-care business in the developing world. And an Intel exec is also supposed to attend; Intel and GE recently announced a collaboration designed to allow doctors to monitor patients at home. Here’s more on that effort.
