One impressive thing about health-care-related crime in South Florida: The perps keep coming up with new ways to break the law. The latest, courtesy of the Miami Herald:
A hospital employee sells patient records to a middle man, who passes them on to a personal-injury lawyer. The lawyer uses the records to find potential clients, and shares part of any proceeds with the middle man.
That’s what the FBI says happened at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to the Herald.
The hospital employee, an ultrasound technician, pleaded guilty to wrongful disclosure of health care information and was fired by the hospital. The alleged middle man was arrested Wednesday, and the lawyer is under investigation.
“Jackson Health System is committed to patient confidentiality,” the hospital said in a statement, according to the Herald. “We follow all privacy laws and do not condone any behavior that violates such policies.”
