So the feds are about to start shelling out tens of billions of dollars to encourage a national switch to electronic health records. But a few key details about what docs and hospitals will have to do to qualify for federal money remain unclear: The stimulus bill says providers must show “meaningful use” of “certified” systems, but leaves those terms largely undefined.
A definition of “meaningful use” may be coming soon.
“Meaningful use is very much on our mind,” David Blumenthal, the feds’ health IT chief, said this morning on a conference call with reporters. “We hope to provide a direction and some specifications in the late spring, early summer.”
Figuring out the criteria for certification is also a high priority, but Blumenthal (pictured) wouldn’t say whether CCHIT, the main body for health IT certification in this country, will continue to have a key role.
Blumenthal also announced appointments to a few committees that will advise the feds on issues including meaningful use as well as certification. You can see the lists of committee members here and here.
